Tile Art History

There are many types of tiles. Down throughout the history of time people have used various processes to make decorative tiles. In fact, decorative tiles have been around for about 4000 years. Glazes were applied to clay to make vessels, plates, etc. The glaze made the items stronger and water proofed it as well. Some of the tiles were hand painted with different decorations such as flowers, plants, geometric designs, animals, etc. Some tiles were patterned so that it would take four tiles to complete a picture. More complicated designs took up to sixteen tiles to complete a pattern.

At the beginning, tiles were mostly used for flooring or roofing. Only the rich could afford this luxury. All over the world beautiful buildings have been inlaid with beautiful tiles. Pictures became popular as more uses were found. Religious pictures became common.

Now a fun and new way of making pictures has arrived. These pictures look like pieces of tiles that have been put together to be framed and hung. The process of making these pictures is so simple that anyone can make one. It starts with a board that has been cut with grooves. A picture of your choice is cut to fit between the grooves. The grooves are painted to compliment the picture. The picture pieces are then glued to the board. A resin is then poured over the entire surface. A beautiful heirloom can be made from this simple process. Let us make your picture for you if you feel you cannot do it yourself.
